Kirkby Town Council

Kirkby has a long history, but in 1958 it became Kirkby Urban District and was managed by Kirkby Urban District Council. Under that council the town centre was developed from largely empty fields to a shopping centre with a main parade, an open-air market, a large function suite, ASDA supermarket, civic buildings, college and much more besides.

In 1974 Kirkby Urban District Council was abolished during a major local government reorganisation in England, becoming part of the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley. Since then, Kirkby’s town centre has been in a spiral of decline, with many of our facilities having been lost.

Opinions differ, but we believe a thorough and honest investigation of establishing a new Kirkby Town Council should be made, with the facts presented to the people of Kirkby.
